A silicone door seal does one thing: it closes the gap at the bottom of the door and leaves nothing for anyone to trip over. The Vellure strip is a full metre long, 5cm wide and 6mm thick, with a white finish that blends into a painted or uPVC door.

The profile has multiple hollow chambers rather than one flat blade. Those chambers give the seal body without making it stiff, and they help soften the noise that slips under a door. The adhesive backing is the part that matters at fitting: it is designed to stick to most smooth surfaces and, according to the supplier, can be removed without leaving a residue.

Installation takes a minute. Wipe and dry the bottom of the door, peel back the backing, press the strip along the edge and trim any excess with scissors. With a maximum gap fill of about 3.8cm it suits typical front doors and internal doors on hard floors. If your gap is wider, a deeper brush strip is the better choice.

How to fit a silicone door seal in five steps

Step by step

  1. Measure the door width at the bottom edge.
  2. Cut the strip a few millimetres shorter so it clears the frame.
  3. Clean the bottom of the door and let it dry.
  4. Peel back the backing and press the strip on, starting at the hinge end.
  5. Close the door slowly and check the seal touches the floor without dragging.

If it drags

Lift the strip a millimetre or two. A seal that is pressed too hard will wear quickly and make the door stiff on carpet.
