A loose draught excluder is easy to buy and easy to lose. People step over it, drag it, and one day it ends up in the other room. This one fixes the problem by attaching to the door. A hook-and-loop strip is pressed onto the bottom of the door, the cushion hooks onto it, and from then on the excluder opens and closes with the door.

It is a firm cushion, 91cm long and 10cm deep, made from durable polyester and polypropylene. That depth helps it fill gaps up to roughly 10cm, so it is well suited to a front door over a tiled hallway or a utility door where the gap is bigger than a foam strip can cover. The grey cover is plain and wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Because it is fixed to the door rather than the floor, it drags lightly across the surface each time the door swings. That is fine on smooth tile, vinyl and laminate; on a thick carpet it is worth testing a small section first. The strip lets you remove and reposition the cushion, which makes it a good fit for rented homes where you would rather not screw anything in.

Prepare the bottom edge

Wipe the underside of the door with a mild degreaser and let it dry completely. Adhesive grips best on a clean, warm surface, so fit it in a warm room.

Position the strip

Hold the cushion against the door and mark where its top edge should sit. Press the adhesive strip along the line, press for thirty seconds, and then attach the cushion.

Care for the finish

A gloss or a varnish takes strip adhesive better than a flaking painted surface. If the paint is old, test a small piece in a hidden spot first and peel it off to check the paint stays put. When you want to remove the strip, warm it gently with a hairdryer and peel slowly at a low angle.
